"FROG AND SCHIEBL” An existence with assistance (film by Anita Knochner) This film was made in 2001 by the ABM (Association Handicap and Media) and shows the friendship that has developed over the years between me (nickname ‘frog’) and one of my carers (nickname ‘Schiebl’). |

“I WANT TO LIVE A THOUSAND YEARS” A life with the iron lung (film by Max Kronawitter) made in the year 2000 Independent in spite of a most serious handicap – the film portraits Ferdinand in his mid- forties who as a two-year old was struck by polio. In spite of his extremely serious handicap that ties him to the iron lung at night, he - with the help of his carers - leads an independent, highly active life. A serious of ethnic questions are touched, such as the dignity of a person, the value of a life, one’s behavior towards a disabled person, social help, euthanasia. Ferdinand takes a clear and convincing view point . The film manages to touch not only such important subjects but at the same time shows the spectators the fate of a person right from the midst of our society whom one is not likely to meet in our everyday life. |

“PITY THAT WE ARE SO SPECIAL” Life with a handicapped partner (film by Anita Read 2009) Tenderness and sex with a seriously handicapped partner is difficult to imagine by many. For Karin Knoll and Ferdinand Schiessl this is part of their relationship. But until they reached the point where they could be together they had to go a long way. Seven years ago they met. Ferdinand has round-the-clock care . He still cannot comprehend his luck. “A relationship with somebody like me is – as everybody can surely imagine – extremely difficult. Karin of all people fell across me who what concerns physical handicap can offer absolutely everything. Karin learnt to look after her Ferdinand, to nurse and to care for him. Only in this way their being together and their intimacy possible. Improvisation is vital, Ferdinand cannot move at all. “ A pity that we are so special” says Karin, when people show interest in their relationship. She doesn’t leave any doubt about the fact that in Ferdinand she has found the partner of |
